You choose your base, add compatible actives or botanical extracts, and make it yours.

Before you begin, follow these simple guidelines to keep your creation safe, stable and beautifully formulated.

Before You Mix

1. Start With the Right Base

Choose your BaseMakers base according to the product you want to create — face wash, serum, moisturizer, shampoo, conditioner or another format.

Every base has its own compatibility and maximum addition guidelines.

Check these before choosing your ingredients.

2. Choose Ingredients for a Purpose

Start with your concern — not with the number of ingredients you can add.

Hydration · Brightening · Pigmentation · Barrier Support · Acne Care · Hair Repair

Choose ingredients that support that goal.

A focused formulation with a few thoughtfully selected ingredients is usually better than adding everything at once.

3. Check Compatibility

Not every cosmetic ingredient works in every formulation.

Before adding an ingredient, check:

Is it compatible with this base?
Is it water-soluble or oil-soluble?
What is its recommended usage level?
Does it require a particular pH?
Can it be combined with the other ingredients I'm using?

BaseMakers provides compatibility and usage guidance to make these decisions easier.

Measure. Don't Guess.

Cosmetic ingredients should be measured by weight, not estimated with spoons or drops unless your BaseMakers guide specifically instructs otherwise.

Use an accurate digital scale and follow the quantity provided for your batch size.

Never add extra active assuming it will give faster results.

More active does not necessarily mean better performance and may increase irritation or affect the formulation.

Stay within the recommended usage level.

Using BaseMakers Active Kits

When using a BaseMakers pre-measured Active Kit or Booster designed for a specific quantity of base, follow the instructions supplied with the kit.

Use the kit only with the recommended BaseMakers base and batch size.

Do not divide, double or combine kits unless the formulation guide specifically allows it.

Pre-measured means we've made the measuring easier.

You still need to follow the mixing instructions.

Using Botanical Extracts

Botanicals can be a beautiful part of modern formulation — but the form of the botanical matters.

Whenever possible, use cosmetic-grade extracts suitable for the base you're customizing.

Do not directly add fresh:

Fruit · Juice · Milk · Fresh Herbs · Vegetable Pulp · Kitchen Ingredients

to a preserved BaseMakers product unless a specific BaseMakers formulation guide instructs you to do so.

These materials can introduce water, microorganisms and instability into your product.

Natural still needs formulation care.

Keep Everything Clean

Before you begin:

Wash and dry your hands thoroughly.
Clean and sanitize your workspace.
Use clean, dry mixing tools.
Use clean and suitable containers.
Avoid touching the product directly with your fingers.
Close ingredient containers immediately after use.

Water, dirty utensils or repeated unnecessary handling can introduce contamination into your product.

Follow the Mixing Instructions

Different ingredients may need different methods of incorporation.

Some can be added directly.

Some need to be dissolved first.

Some may require a particular temperature or mixing method.

Do not assume every ingredient can simply be poured into the base.

Follow the instructions provided for your selected ingredient or formulation.

Watch the Total Addition

Every BaseMakers base has a limit to how much additional material it can comfortably accept.

Adding too many ingredients — even when each ingredient is individually compatible — can affect:

Texture · Viscosity · pH · Stability · Preservation · Performance

Always stay within the maximum total addition level specified for your base.

Check pH When Required

Some actives can change the final pH of your formulation.

When your formulation guide specifies a target pH, check the finished product using an appropriate pH testing method.

Do not make unnecessary pH adjustments if your formulation does not require them.

After You Mix

Observe your finished formulation.

It should look and behave as expected for the recipe you've followed.

If you notice significant:

Separation · Unexpected thinning · Lumps · Unusual odour · Major colour change · Unexpected precipitation

stop using the product and check your formulation before continuing.

Patch Test Before Regular Use

Whenever you create a new formulation — particularly one containing actives or botanical extracts — perform an appropriate patch test before wider use.

If you experience persistent redness, burning, swelling, itching or another undesirable reaction, discontinue use.

Cosmetic ingredients can affect individuals differently.

Store It Right

Keep your finished product:

Clean · Properly closed · Away from direct sunlight · Away from excessive heat and moisture

Follow any specific storage instructions provided with your base, active or formulation guide.

Do not use a product that develops an unusual smell, appearance, separation or other signs of deterioration.

✓ Choose ingredients according to your concern.

✓ Check compatibility before adding anything.

✓ Measure accurately.

✓ Stay within recommended usage levels.

✓ Respect the base's maximum addition limit.

✓ Keep your tools and workspace clean.

✓ Follow ingredient-specific mixing instructions.

✓ Check pH when your formulation requires it.

✓ Patch test your finished creation.

✕ Don't assume more ingredients = better formulation.

✕ Don't randomly substitute ingredients.

✕ Don't add fresh kitchen ingredients to preserved bases.

✕ Don't exceed recommended active concentrations.
